A great way to experience Africa at its most authentic and wild is to choose a mobile safari. Perfectly suited to the active and curious traveller who wants to get off the beaten path, mobile safaris offer a flexible alternative to the traditional lodge based safari. It is possible to experience a mobile safari in many countries in Africa including Botswana, Kenya, Namibia & Zambia to name a few.
Mobile safaris offer everything from game drives to bush walks to canoeing and even scenic flights to see game from a unique vantage point. For the more discerning ‘adventurer’ choose a mobile safari with a personal guide and vehicle.
Here are some of our favourite mobile safaris:
1. Thru The Lens Safaris – Botswana
We recently put together a family holiday in Botswana which included a private, fully guided 6-night mobile safari with Thru the Lens Safaris. They are a personalised mobile safari company led by expert guide Nkosi Sibanda. They offer fully supported expedition style safaris under canvas giving you the flexibility to explore the wild spaces that Botswana has to offer.
Here’s what our clients had to say:
Nikosi and his team were wonderful. Friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. We saw a wide range of mammals and birds in their natural habitat, with an expert guide. The tented safari was more comfortable than we expected – camp beds rather than mattresses, and a whole team looking after us. Listening to the sounds of the bush overnight was amazing. The weather was perfect, cool and comfortable nights, beautiful sunrises, sunny mornings looking at wildlife and atmospheric sunsets, followed by clear and starry skies. The rich biodiversity of the Okavango will live with us forever.

2. Beagle Expeditions – Botswana
Beagle Expeditions is a small, intimate, family-run business owned by Simon and Marleen Byron. Together they have more than 30 years of experience in the safari industry in Botswana. Beagle Expeditions are the only mobile safari operation in Botswana to offer total exclusivity of both the camp, as well as the private concession located in the Abu Private Reserve. All access into and out of the Kweene Trails is by helicopter transfer only, meaning less air and road traffic and more time to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the bush only.
3. The Safari Series – Kenya
The Safari Series is an authentic semi-mobile camp operating in the Lolldaiga Hills, a 50,000 acre private conservancy in the rugged Laikipia region northwest of Mount Kenya. The Safari Series has a fleet of custom-built Land Rovers made for the bush and for game viewing. A highlight of a stay here is being able to drive original Series 1 or 2 Land Rovers or Defenders on the reserve, a wonderful way to experience the bush in the company of an expert guide. There is also the option to spend a night sleeping under the stars in their fly camp giving you the perfect location to start your safari the next morning.
