Richard and Nicky, wanted one final "once in a lifetime" family holiday before their eldest child started University. They asked DD to compile an adventure itinerary, with lots of memorable places and exciting activities. They were also looking for accommodation and locations that would appeal to them all without blowing the limited budget.
"Very good planning by Outposts Travel Africa. Obviously a great deal of time and effort had been put in on our behalf. A wonderful family holiday, all perfectly arranged. It was over far too quickly but fantastic memories!"
South Africa is brilliant for active family holidays with teenage children. It's also affordable as one can self-drive, stay in excellent B and Bs, with delicious food and activities for everyone. Game viewing, beaches, hiking, white water rafting, canoeing and battlefield tours are but a few of the activities available. For younger children there are wonderful areas that are non-malarial and with only a two hour time difference jet lag won't spoil a minute of your time abroad.
Start at Sodwana Bay in the boundaries of the Islmangaliso Wetland Park. The accommodation here is comfortable with a relaxed seaside atmosphere. The key is the owner's passion and knowledge of the marine environment taking you to the less populated bays to enjoy snorkelling or diving in the protected coral reefs, populated with a huge diversity of fish and invertebrates.
Other activities include riding and quad biking; look out for the many small mammals including Bush Babies, Genets and the Striped Mongoose. Go to Muzi pans for an afternoons canoeing and enjoy an evening BBQ.
Transfer to a Lodge situated in its private reserve close to Hluhuluwe Game Reserve where you will stay in your own stone and thatch chalet on a cliff top overlooking the river. Enjoy a guided Taste of the Bush experience on bush walks and game drives learning about the local flora and spotting wildlife. Spend a day in St Lucia looking for hippos, crocodiles, fish eagles and kingfishers on an exploratory boat trip.
Collect a hire car and drive to Fugitives Drift, and stay in a spacious en-suite cottage with beautiful broad views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. The next day you will be led by some of the finest guides in Africa, on a thought provoking and emotionally charged tour of the Zulu battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift.
With your heads still full of the images and legend of the Zulus drive on to the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains. Spend three nights at a small Guest House near Giants Castle in the centre of the Drakensberg Mountain Ridge with friendly and welcoming hospitality, excellent home cooked food and be ideally based to discover and explore; walks in the mountains, visits to bushman paintings, the Karkloof Canopy tour, the Midlands Meander, horse trails, fishing and if there on a Wednesday, a concert by the Drakensberg Boys Choir.
