Travel Africa's journey to Ethiopia: the Horn of Africa

July 25 2015

My first experience of flying with Ethiopian Airlines was a joy. From check in at Heathrow through to landing in Addis Ababa, I couldn't fault the service & would highly recommend flying with them on a visit to Ethiopia as they fly direct and offer low cost return fares to Addis.

It can be very confusing when travelling to a new destination whether to obtain a visa on arrival or before you depart. We usually encourage our clients to obtain a visa before arrival in country but this is not always practical or convenient and so obtaining a visa at the airport or border crossing may be necessary. Kenya has recently introduced an e-visa system & Uganda & Rwanda have recently increased the cost of their tourist visas making the East African Tourist Visa the best solution when visiting a combination of Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya.

I decided to get my tourist visa on arrival at Addis Ababa airport. The process was seamless and the staff were very efficient and within no time, I was collecting my bags and on my way to the hotel. I spent my first night at Hotel Lobelia in Bole area of Addis Ababa located very close to the airport. Lovely place with friendly, welcoming staff and exceptionally clean rooms that had high speed wifi. There's even a elevator that takes you to the rooftop restaurant! I would highly recommend for a stay in Addis and I am very much looking forward to the rest of my journey. Tomorrow I fly to to Arba Minch before making my way south to the Omo Valley.
